As it was early evening and high tide, the trip we were able to get very close to the beaches and saw some interesting wildlife (inc a seal). The food is picked up at Brixham and delivered to the boat fresh. If you've not tried Rockfish, their fish is great. The skipper who did a commentary (& not the usual scripted commentaries with faux humour one gets on some trips with other providers), he showed he knew the area as he was a local lad who was a fisherman & knew the land and the water. His passion for the area came over.If you're in Torquay, Paigton or Brixham, they pick up from all 3, do this trip. read less..

We got talking to John the skipper who was born here and has been on boats all his life, like his father before him. He knows Torbay like the back of his hand, which means he can safely take the Brixham Belle into places other sightseeing boats can't - we went really close into the coastline at one point and saw amazing rock formations, caves and quartz, as well as hundreds of birds and even a huge seal sunning himself on a rock. We were so close we could almost reach out and touch him.
Further out to sea we saw porpoises and looked for dolphins - there have apparently been a lot around lately (and they're much more playful than porpoises, which is something I didn't know till this morning) but unfortunately we didn't see any today.
The nice thing about this boat trip was that it seemed very flexible - maybe it was because there weren't all that many of us on board (like I say it was early!), but we went where things looked most interesting, and felt that John really cared about showing us the best of the sea and coastline around Brixham. He obviously knows and loves his local area, and his job, and that made for a really special and memorable trip.
The commentary was very informative, as you'd hope for from a local, but was also friendly and entertaining. Crew member Adam (?) - sorry if I've got the name wrong - was kind and helpful too, and the boat was clean, tidy, and obviously well looked-after. There is also a bar and a toilet on board.
Well, I guess it's obvious that we had a really lovely time, but I honestly can't rate this experience highly enough. We just had an hour's trip today, but they also do longer runs (Brixham to Teignmouth?) and fishing trips, so we're hoping to go back for more before the end of the summer.
If you do one thing in Brixham, make it a trip on the Brixham Belle (ideally after a fish market tour if you can get onto one - they get booked up early). It completely exceeded our expectations, and was absolutely wonderful! read less..
